the calm before the storm

Fifty years after Aizen's defeat, the Gotei 13 has recovered well from the Winter War, enjoying an era of peace. New Captains have been appointed to replace the ones who defected with Aizen, and a new human world-based division has been created, headed by none other than Urahara Kisuke. However, five years ago, an unexpected tragedy occurred. The indomitable leader of the Gotei 13, Captain Commander Yamamoto was found dead of "natural" causes, and a successor was quickly appointed. The remaining captains are promoted to the Royal Guard, making room for a generation of new faces.

At the same time, the Quincy also take it upon themselves to protect humans from the ever growing number of Hollows that are constantly on the attack. Following the Shinigami's example, the Order of the Holy Cross is formed, with the sole goal of protecting humans from Hollow attacks. The Shinigami offer their hand in friendship, but what will be the Quincy's answer? It may not be very friendly, considering something powerful is picking off lone Quincy all around the world, something hidden and powerful. The humans' protectors are shaken.

But perhaps the humans do not need protecting. Many of them gained spiritual powers after the Winter War and have begun to fight back. One group in particular, known as The Assassins, takes this idea of the self reliance even further, resisting Quincy influence violently and encouraging others to do the same.

Meanwhile, in the sandy wastes of Hueco Mundo, four figures rose up to replace Aizen's rule and lead the Hollow to victory against the Shinigami: Grimmjow Jeagerjacques, Tia Halibel, Neliel Tu Odelschwanck, and Ulquiorra Schiffer. After crushing any resistance, they are now regarded as the gods of the wastes. Without any domestic worries, they turn their attention to the human world, a world still ripe for conquest.
