This is a fun exercise for a few reasons. One, it can show you whether you are making a character exactly like you or not. Sometimes people don't realize they're not stepping out of the box. (Guilty as charged!) Not that you have to, of course. It's fine to make a someone like you because it's easiest to stay true to that character! ^^ Two, it can show you things you many not have realized about either your character or yourself. And three, it can show others both how your character is and how you really are.
I'll use Avatar Leyna and myself as an example.
Similarities:

Have long fair hair.
Tend to have off-set priorities.
Are spiritual.
Like archery.
Are strong willed.
Are kind and helpful.
Differences:
Unlike Leyna, I...
Am not a firebender. (If I were a bender, I think I'd be water.)
Do not have siblings.
Do not have a father.
Am not high maintenance.
Am not a teenager. (Now I feel old!

Have blue eyes, not brown.
Do not love the beach. (I hate saltwater and sand. >_<)
Do not swordfight.
Was not raised with the high life, though it was still really nice.
